Snow Camping
Our one day without electricity turned into four days without electricity. At first, we tried to turn it into an adventure. We made "Snow Ice Cream."
Here is our recipe: collect clean snow in a big bowl.
The warmest place in our house was in bed. We spent a lot of time trying to stay warm in bed. We were very grateful we all had expensive down-filled sleeping bags. We used sleeping bags, and all the blankets in the house. We told stories and continued to pretend we were camping.
The girls stayed in their sleeping bags for most of the day. They are enjoying breakfast (cold chicken and rice krispy treats) in this picture.
Rachel and I took a little walk outside. The temperature outside was just as cold as the temperature inside our house. We took a few pictures. It was so beautiful. I love the icicles that form below the tree trunks at the river.
It was a little scary around our neighborhood because the cold and the weight of the snow cause several trees to fall. We kept hearing popping sounds followed by the sounds of trees falling. We watched a tree fall near the river then decided to get out of there before one fell on our heads.

We loved our neighbor's quadruple snowman and igloo.
Our rain gutter icicles got very long.
A huge branch broke off of our neighbor's tree.
The picnic table by the river was covered with snow.
The river is so beautiful when it snows.

This is the lake near our house. It was covered with snow and ice. The fallen tree in the lake fell several years ago.

Rachel really wanted to sled, but there was so much snow that she kept getting stuck.
Even sledding on our road was too hard.
If you haven't seen the movie I posted a few days ago, watch the very end where I recorded a car trying to get up our hill, and a truck trying to get down. The road got even worse. It is really hard to drive through 20 inches of snow. Sledding didn't work either.
Rachel even tried to get a running start and leap into the sled. Nope. Stuck. Too much snow.
I decided to take a shower and use up whatever hot water was left in the hot water tank. It felt so nice and warm. When I discovered the shampoo was frozen solid, I decided we really needed to get out of our house. We decided to go to a friend's house in Everett because they had electricity and it would get us closer to dance class in Seattle and closer to a Chinese New Year activity in Bellevue.
I dug the car out. It took several attempts to get up the first hill, but we made it. After several attempts at the second hill, we slid off the road. I really appreciate the friends who shoveled me out. I was just going to leave the car and walk to their house and give up on dance class and Chinese New Year, but they were willing to help me get out. After 2 1/2 hours, we were FINALLY out of our neighborhood. The main roads were fine because they had been plowed (except for the roads with trees fallen...)
I was so glad to escape. We had left our house for 6 days and living with no electricity isn't fun at all even pretending to camp, visits from Santa, and just trying to make an adventure out of our situation didn't help too much.
Dance class was canceled. I wasn't sure why. The snow in Seattle wasn't nearly as bad as our Granite Falls snow. The Chinese New Year activity wasn't canceled. We had a wonderful time enjoying the Lunar New Year celebration at the Westminster Chapel. I'll post pictures of that later. This post is already too long.
We returned home after the New Year celebration. We were pleasantly surprised that the roads in our neighborhood had been plowed. I am grateful the snow is melting quickly, but not so quickly that our river floods. Most of all, I am grateful for electricity!!! I happily did laundry and dishes until 1:00 in the morning. It is so nice and toasty warm in our house!
I just have to add these pictures that my family sent. I love the giant snowman they made at my parent's cabin. There isn't as much snow at the cabin as usual...there isn't much snow in Idaho. There usually isn't much snow here. They all want snow. I'd love to send them ours. One or two days of snow is enough for me. I'm glad our snow is melting and I hope it is completely gone soon. I hope it doesn't snow for another year. I'm through with winter.

Put the clean snow into a smaller serving bowl...
Add whipped cream...
Then add ice cream topping (Rachel likes strawberry, Erin Joy likes chocolate, and I like both!)

Eating snow ice cream on days without electricity, is silly because it made us all colder. We all wanted something warm. We pretended we were camping and put our little camping stove on the porch (we didn't want to show up on the news with all the other silly people who die of carbon monoxide poisoning when they use camping stoves inside the house). We do have water, but it seemed more exciting to melt snow in order to boil noodles.
This bowl of noodles tasted so good to me. Thanks for the fun bowl, Aunt Becky!

They played "mermaid" for a long time. Erin Joy was the ocean because her sleeping bag is blue and Rachel was the mermaid. The mermaid kept jumping into the ocean.

Erin Joy went to the Children's Museum with our friend Jean and her "niece." Rachel and I went ice skating. It felt so good to get out of the house and do something! We played games, puzzles, read, and Jean even made cupcakes with the girls. My girls sure had fun! Thanks Jean!! We appreciate you!!
