Third Grade Field Trip

Rachel and her class went to the Seattle Art Museum. I tagged along as a parent chaperone. It is much more fun to go on a field trip as a parent than as a teacher:) No cameras are allowed in the museum so I took a picture of the students getting the behavior lecture before entering.

All the students were listening politely to the lecture except for Rachel. When she sees her mom with a camera, she knows to look and smile!!

The theme for the visit to the museum was "family traditions." The docent did a wonderful job of showing us pictures having to do the family traditions. One of the featured painters was Li Jin who painted a 65 foot long scroll featuring favorite food from his family. The calligraphy behind the food are recipes and comments about the food. This is a terrible picture of the painting. I just took a thumbnail off the museum's website to give you an idea of what the painting looked like.

The kids then colored their own scrolls with the instructions to focus on a family tradition. Rachel drew Christmas...complete with a fireplace. We don't have a fireplace.

My scroll was full of vacation places we have been and the Great Wall of China. I have never been to the Great Wall of China, but hoping to go next summer.

Exhausted, Rachel fell asleep on the ride home. I did too! Nothing like a good nap after an eventful day!

Hats

Erin Joy's new trick is making hats. We all have several hats so now she is making them for the stuffed animals.

Banana Sushi

This was a fun, quick idea we got from a magazine. Of course, I can't remember which magazine. A banana, a greenish fruit roll-up, and sprinkles is all it takes to make this fun sushi. We had to eat our sushi with chopsticks. Very fun:)

The plate is indeed upside down. There is a reason for that...you see the other side is decorated with Hercules characters and I wanted a picture of the sushi without a Hercules background so I turned the plate over. Why didn't I just get a plain plate? Well, all my plain plates are dirty. Time to do the dishes...

Day at the Zoo

We had a great time at the zoo today. It was a beautiful day. NO RAIN!! ONLY SUNSHINE and 75 degrees! Perfect!! I told my girls they didn't need their winter coats, but they didn't believe me. Erin Joy wears her coat ALL the time and it drives me crazy. I think she wears it all the time just to drive me crazy. Ignore their coats in the video. It really was a beautiful day.  The sane people at the zoo were wearing shorts and tank tops.

Our favorite part of the day was watching the grizzlies destroy a pretend campsite. I never want to meet a grizzly in my campsite! I left the audio of the bear expert talking during our visit because it was very interesting. He also had a great accent:) He was cute too!!




Tonight, the girls made a "tent" using a box. They decided they wouldn't be attacked by bears because the food was 100 yards away.  They are sleeping in it tonight. Just when they fell asleep, they were attacked by the cat! The silly kitty is having fun with the box. The girls are now asleep again. I wonder if they will make it all night in the box with the cat:)

Look carefully and you will see the cat at the back of the box!

Erin Joy's Report

 Erin Joy did a great job with her polar habitat project. She had to choose between desert, ocean, forest, and polar habitats. She told me, "I want to do Idaho because it is at the bottom of the world."  I couldn't convince her that Idaho wasn't at the bottom of the world even after showing her a globe. I finally convinced her that Idaho is just about as cold as Antarctica in the winter. She then agreed to do her report on Antarctica.  I think she did a great job! Rachel and I had fun helping her with her project.

Both girls had a blast creating things with the left-over clay. Now we have clay creations all over the house and smashed into the carpet. Oh well.
